The hammock is a hanging bed that has been widely used by South American tribes and brought to Europe by Columbus. Hanging the beds above the ground was a good way to avoid poisonous insects and animal bites. The word comes from Taino - one of the languages of the Araucanac language group (Caribbean languages and especially Haiti) and means fish net. The first hammocks were most likely woven of barkwood and subsequently of textile fibers. Because of their balance and convenience, they are gaining popularity among mariners.
Nowadays, a hammock is a place for relaxation, carefree swinging, sleeping and is equally attractive to small and large. Because in the classic case, this bed requires at least two hanging points, and not always the ones that can be found in the home, porch, garden or yard, we will give you an idea how to make a stand yourself. All you need are a few long, sturdy beams and / or boards and some fasteners.

Do it yourself hammock stand

There are several basic details in this type of construction that should be considered in the planning phase. The main dimensions depend on the total length of the hammock. The standard ones are about two to two and a half inches long and about three meters from the suspension points (e), which is regulated by ropes. These are the reference dimensions around which the rest of the frame can be calculated. Depending on the material, the elements A, B, C and D may be single beams or double beams. Another important point is the angle of attachment of the support arms (C) to the base (B) - 45 ° is the best option. It can also control the effective distance between the suspension hooks (e). The stabilizing support elements (D) can be either internally (Fig. 1) or externally (Fig. 2) fastening, and the transverse stabilizers (A) at both ends and at about 50 cm sideways. Therefore, to ensure stability and security, it is advisable for the standard hammock to have the basic dimensions approximately: A - 100cm; B - 180-200cm; C - 120cm; D - from 40 to 70cm (depending on the method and angle of placement). Calculate the type of connecting elements.
When you're done planning, buy the materials you need and assemble the frame. This is a relatively quick and easy undertaking if the plan is good. Impregnate, stain, varnish as desired, wait for it to dry and install the carrier hooks (e). They should be level. Attach the hammock and check for stability. For omissions, reinforce elements or add additional stabilizers (D).
At each stage of design or construction, consult a specialist if you are unsure of your actions, and when done, you can enjoy the peace and timelessness of this hanging and rocking bed.
